Today is the 2,068 anniversary of the death of Julius Caesar
I’m not gonna talk too much about Caesar here in that I’ve spent the last few years working on a book about him, and I think that book says it better than I could here, but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t connect the release of the book with the date in question.
Caesar was a complicated man who I initially found compelling in part because his story was familiar: a leader hated by the government around him who nonetheless found success charming the populace and forcing the senate to take his hand and smile through their teeth. I also liked the idea that Caesar was very rarely in Rome and that good and bad, most people’s perceptions of the man were likely based on his actions absorbed in snippets at a distance. People who’ve read my work for a while know I’m obsessed with the idea of the weight of the abstraction of culture and reputation on the humans who inspire both. How from a big enough stage you’d at odds be at odds with rivals, sure, but also competing with your own portrait on the wall.
And how perception of that avatar might bring repercussions the real figure might not see til they were in his guts.
You can read the rest here. If we reach 15k there'll be a 2nd guest variant cover. Raising a piece of death-day cake to all of you.
